Fireproof is a Christian based film that takes place in Albany, Georgia in the present time. It is about a firefighter, Caleb, and his hospital administrator wife Catherine, married for 7 years. Because of a breakdown in communication and different priorities in their lives, the couple is contemplating a divorce. Each one faults the other for the problems in the marriage. Caleb’s addiction to internet pornography, has led Catherine to distance herself from him. She feels humiliated, disrespected and unappreciated. She feels that Caleb is selfish by not helping with the care of her ailing mother. Caleb also feels disrespected by his wife as she does not show him affection, or value him as the head of the household. As the couple takes steps to end their marriage, Caleb confides in his father about the impending divorce. His father, wanting to do everything he can to prevent this from occurring, offers a 40-day challenge to his son, called “The Love Dare.” His father explains that it was what saved him and his wife from divorcing, and is what led them to the Lord. Apprehensive, Caleb agrees to try it, unbeknownst to his wife. “The Love Dare” is a series of 40 daily acts of love that will prove Caleb’s commitment to Catherine. At the fire station, one of his Christian co-workers encourages Caleb through this challenge, and shares his own past struggles. As the days progress, Catherine, unimpressed and suspicious of Caleb’s motives, rejects his efforts because she feels they are not sincere. Discouraged, Caleb tells his father that she will not give him a chance to prove his love for her, and constantly rejects him. His father shows him that although God is constantly rejected, he still shows love for his people. Soon after that, Caleb gives his life over to the Lord, as he understands what love really means, and this understanding leads him to become a Christian. As time progresses, Catherine begins to see a change in Caleb’s behavior. Issues that were a struggle and took priority in the marriage, no longer were a problem. Catherine begins to trust Caleb again, and decides to cancel the impending divorce. Because of Caleb’s example, she gives her life over to the Lord. At a ceremony, the couple reaffirms their wedding vows, this time as a covenant with God. The 2008 film stars Kirk Cameron, Erin Berthea, Ken Bavel, and Harris Malcom.
